It looks like Facebook wants us to go through some quality content and focus less on memes and funny photos. The biggest social network in the world has announced that is tweaking the algorithm for its news feed so that users see more high-quality articles about current events. “The goal of News Feed is to show the right content to the right people at the right time whether it’s from a close friend or a news source halfway across the world”, wrote Varun Kacholia and Minwen Ji in a company blog post.
Facebook has hence tweaked its news feed algorithms, which it says will be adjusted to promote high-quality articles from your favorite publications. The social network is looking to surface more articles that get clicks on mobile devices as well as resurface articles that have received comments from your friends. This essentially means, if your friends post, like, and click articles on their mobile devices, you should start to notice more links to articles in your own news feed. This will apply to both the desktop news feed and the mobile news feed, although Facebook says you should see a bigger increase in articles showing up on your smartphones and tablets.
“We’ve noticed that people enjoy seeing articles on Facebook, and so we’re now paying closer attention to what makes for high-quality content and how often articles are clicked on from News Feed on mobile”, said the duo in the post. In addition to the news feed update, Facebook has also announced a related articles feature. Users will be able to see up to three related articles after clicking on a link in the news feed. The company announced in October that Facebook’s referral traffic to news publications was up 170% in 2012, meaning more people are clicking on articles.
The move represents Facebook’s latest push to eliminate “low quality” posts from users’ news feeds. This latest update from Facebook to incorporate more news into timelines looks like a desperate move to Twitter’s success as a news platform. But this is not the first attempt of the social network to be more about news and current events. Facebook followed Twitter’s footsteps by rolling out verified pages, trending topics, embedded posts and of course hashtags. Also, lets not forget the recently announced expansion plans of expand own TV analytics to 8 other countries and TV Networks.
I personally want Facebook to be something more than a platform for personal sharing and hence appreciate the recent New Feed update. But again the big blue social network might face some music from its users for making its service less personal. What do you think about the latest update? Share with us your thoughts.
