We have seen the Taj Mahal or the Eiffel Tower with the help of Google’s Street View. Now, you can show other places that are surrounding to your neighborhood on the Street View, thanks to the internet behemoth. Google has introduced a new tool that enables users to create 360 degree virtual tour of any place of their choice.
Users can take photos of their favorite place either from their Android smartphone or a professional DSLR camera. Next, they will have to upload them to Photo Sphere and share them with the world on Google Maps. Anyone can now check out the place on Google Maps and even select your virtual tour and see the place through your eyes.
“We are excited to see the different types of Street View experiences that everyone will contribute. For example, this feature can now enable environmental non-profits to document and promote the beautiful places they strive to protect. It also opens up a new tool for photographers to showcase diversity in a specific location — by times of day, weather conditions or cultural events — in a way that Street View currently doesn’t cover”, announced Evan Rapoport, Product Manager, Google Maps & Photo Sphere in a blog post.
All created maps can be embedded onto any website or application using the Google Maps API. Google hopes that this new feature will enable people to share and view locations around the world through Google Maps that their teams haven’t reached just yet.
The raging wave of smartphones and tablets have given a push to digital maps around the world. Google has been aggressive about being on the top when it comes to Maps. Last month it updated Google Maps for desktop and also launched Tour Builder and lets you use Google Earth and related services to give you the ability to build rich, visual and experiential presentations. In June this year, it bought an Israeli social mapping company, Waze.
