In a bid to bring faster data connection and faster performance to emerging markets, smartphone chipmaker Qualcomm has taken wraps off its latest Snapdragon 410 chipset processor which supports a 64-bit CPU. The company plans to launch the 410 as a manufacturing sample by the first half of next year, which means it could be in shipping phones by this time in 2014.
Targeted at entry level smartphones, the 410 not only offers better graphics than its predecessors, but also an integrates LTE baseband. Additionally, the Snapdragon 410 chip is the first in the flagship Qualcomm line to bring 64-bit technology along, meaning the powerful Adreno 306 GPU can be used, bringing 1080p video playback and up to a 13-megapixel camera to budget smartphones. Qualcomm is following Apple’s lead by leaping to a 64-bit chip, and says it has many more 64-bit chips to come. To be precise, the Snapdragon 410 is specifically made for devices in the $150 and under off-contract price range. Rather than one of Qualcomm’s own custom-made ARM CPU architectures, the company tells us that Snapdragon 410 will use four of ARM’s Cortex A53 CPU cores.
Speaking on the announcement Jeff Lorbeck, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Qualcomm Technologies, China said, “We are excited to bring 4G LTE to highly affordable smartphones at a sub-$150 price point with the introduction of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor. The Snapdragon 410 chipset will also be the first of many 64-bit capable processors as Qualcomm Technologies helps lead the transition of the mobile ecosystem to 64-bit processing.”
The chip supports all the basic smartphones features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM, NFC functionality, GPS amongst others. It supports Android, Windows and Firefox operating system for smartphones. Currently, Apple’s iPhone 5S uses the 64 bit processor and Moto G Snapdragon 400.
Qualcomm says that the latest Snapdragon chip is targeted at emerging markets and China. India is all set to get its first 4G Xolo smartphone. Also, Bharti Airtel is on the way to roll out 4G service.
