With an aim to expand its user base further, Twitter has teamed up with U2opia to bring its services on mobile phone without an internet connection, as per a latest report from Reuters. The micro blogging site aims to bring users from emerging markets without an internet connection on its platform with this partnership.
Users without internet connect can access the U2opia mobile Twitter service by dialing a simple code to get a feed of the popular trending topics on Twitter. The service uses a telecom protocol named Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD). However this protocol does not allow viewing of pictures, videos or other graphics.
Speaking about the service, Sumesh Menon, Chief Executive and Co-founder, U2opia Mobile said, “USSD as a vehicle for Twitter is almost hand in glove because Twitter has by design a character limit, it’s a very text-driven social network. Eight out of 10 people in emerging markets are still not accessing data on their phone. For a lot of end users in the emerging markets, it’s going to be their first Twitter experience.”
U2opia Mobile which already has existing relationships with Facebook and others will launch its Twitter service in the first quarter of 2014. According to the report, the technology being used is said to be U2opia’s Fonetwish, which works on Facebook and Google Talk. The service is currently used by 11 million people with no internet connection. U2opia typically takes 30 percent to 40 percent of what users pay their telecom company to access its Fonetwish service.
We think this collaboration will help Twitter with it relatively low global market. The over 230 million user service recently filed for an IPO.
