Samsung is gearing up for the launch of its much anticipated smartphone, Galaxy S5 at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. Today, new reports are suggesting that the smartphone giant is also planning to unveil the next iteration of its Galaxy Gear Smartwatch at this event next week.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 will run on Samsung’s homegrown Tizen OS instead of Google’s Android, according to USA Today. Samsung will highlight a new HTML5 version of Tizen running the smartwatch. Details about specific features for Tizen were not disclosed in the report, but it is predicted that its HTML5 functionality will bring along web apps similar to the first-generation Galaxy Gear.
The current Galaxy Gear that was launched in September last year, runs Google’s Android mobile operating system. However, the smartwatch could not live up to the hype or expected usefulness that Samsung had intended. In November last year, the Korean electronic giant announced that Galaxy Gear which garnered poor reviews for its limited capabilities, bulky design, and poor battery life, had sold 80,000 pieces.
The next Galaxy Gear Tizen watch is expected to allow the new Galaxy Gear to sync with a bunch of different devices and not just restrict to Android phones. Tizen is an open source operating system that has backing from 36 companies, including Panasonic, NTT DOCOMO, Vodafone, eBay, McAfee, and more. It features a user interface similar to Android. The new OS build will allow Samsung to attract web developers to create applications for the device.
Another report by The Verge stated that Samsung plans to revamp the Galaxy Gear line with more than one model. 2014 is touted as the year of wearable technology and it looks like Samsung wants to lead this market too. Meanwhile, Apple is widely believed to be working on its so called iWatch. The company is also reportedly making a advanced health monitoring functionality, Healthbook App. Also, the Samsung Galaxy Gear faces a touch competition from Pebble Smartwatch which recently rolled out its own smartwatch app store for iOS.
Will Samsung learn form its previous failure of the its smartwatch or will it make the same mistake with the next one? What do you think? Share with us your views.
