(Before It's News)

Using computers for linguistic analysis has become somewhat of a major requirement when it comes to sifting through the tonnes of text based data that is generated on the Internet. This is especially handy when it comes to research that you might be conducting on text based datasets. The major issue is that linguistic analysis can be automated but such softwares are difficult to understand for the common user but also very expensive. A group of Stanford scientists have now made text analysis more accessible for the general public.

etcml

Their website called etcML houses some complex algorithms and machine learning code which can sift through data and help you make sense of it.  etcML stands for Easy Test Classification with Machine Learning. The website is a repository of text based data sets uploaded by others in addition to the text classification criteria that they employ. A lay person can also upload their text datasets, tweak the the classifiers/parameters and the website will sort out the data accordingly and give you results. You can also use your classifiers and share them with others.

An example of classification on the website about the analysis of Twitter trends. The output  in this example seem to be positive and negative sentiments related to a hashtag or a trend. This could be very useful for social marketing professionals to do a quick analysis of tweets and trend data. Other examples include a Media Bias classifier, Kickstarter success prediction and online peer grading in research. An important aspect of etcML is its prediction capabilities. If enough data is provided and the your classifiers are tweaked accordingly, you would be in a good position to predict and analyse trends in a particular segment. You will have to learn how to arrange your datasets in order to upload them onto the website so that it can make sense of it.

This free tool is an excellent resource for those among us who are into research, data and trend analysis. The good thing about etcML is that you can decide how to use the website. You can build your analysis framework over the advanced algorithms that the Stanford team has developed and thus use it for your purpose. While the service does that all results may not be definitive, it does give you some meaningful ways to analyse your data.

If data analysis interests you, please do give this tool a try and let us know you plan to use it.
