Blackberry finally has some reason to smile after a very long time. The struggling Canadian Smartphone maker has announced that its popular messaging platform Blackberry Messenger (BBM) has gained traction in terms of user base. BBM now has more than 85 million monthly active users and 115 registered users.
This is a 5 million rise from the last quarter, when it had an estimated 80 million monthly active users. Blackberry rolled out BBM for Android and iOS in October last year which is the main reason for the increasing user base. Still BBM is way behind leaders like WhatsApp, WeChat, Line and others.
In addition to users, BlackBerry also revealed that the number of channels on BBM had doubled in the last four months, from 200,000 to around 500,000. The company updated BBM for Android and iOS in February last year with features like support for BBM Voice and BBM Channels along with Dropbox integration. BBM also added Stickers to its service recently that can be bought from the BBM Shop.
Blackberry reported a loss of $42 million and $976 million in revenues in fourth quarter of 2013. It was the first time since 2007 that BlackBerry has reported quarterly revenue below $1 billion. The company sold 3.4 million smartphones this quarter, of which 2.3 million were running BlackBerry’s older platform, not the BlackBerry 10 software introduced in 2013.
Earlier this month Blackberry announced its plans to foray into advertising via BBM with Sponsored posts, invites and other.
