There were rumors last week about Google wanting to rein in OEMs who have tried hard to distance themselves from Google when it comes Android. While they do use Android, they have made many cosmetic changes with the UI which results in the ultimate UI not looking much like Android at all. Even though this it completely legal, Google is not happy about this because OEMs are not explicitly letting users know that Android powers their device.
Now, AndroidPolice reports that Google is enforcing attribution to Android by telling OEMs to display a mandatory ‘Powered by Android’ logo when a phone boots up. Enforcement means that OEMs will have to comply with this and other requests in order to let their users have the Play Store and other Google apps. The Google Mobile Services license has been updated to reflect this. Phones like Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8 have already started sporting the logo. This license update requires all phones to have this new attribution, even if they are not new ones.
This is a new area for Google. The company has been happy to distribute the OS to just about anyone but over the years, the amount of control it has started to maintain on its official version of the OS shows that it is concerned about OEMs and other companies using it for their own advantage. Since the core Android OS is open source, anyone can download it and compile it on their phones. The Google Apps packages are still proprietary and are under license. These official apps are a big part of the Android experience and not many OEMs can thus easily afford not delivering them on the phones they sell.
