A guest post from the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain (PESGB)
6th Annual PESGB Stoneley Lecture ‘Uncertainty – Is Technology the Solution?’ with Lord Robert Winston
Central Hall Westminster, London Tuesday 8 March 2016, 6pm (followed by a free drinks reception)
The PESGB is delighted to announce that the distinguished Parliamentarian, Professor and TV presenter, Robert Winston, will be presenting the 6th Annual Stoneley Lecture on the topic of ‘Uncertainty – Is Technology the Solution?’ at Central Hall Westminster on Tuesday 8 March 2016 from 6pm.
Professor Winston will explore the universality of science, and how many of the issues of scientific responsibility present in biology are likewise relevant to earth sciences and the petroleum industry. He will focus on the concept of scientific literacy; the scientist’s responsibility to engage the public, countered with society’s responsibility to be aware of science.
He will be joined by a panel of PESGB Past Presidents; Professor Jon Gluyas, Dean of Knowledge Exchange at the University of Durham, and Steve Garrett, Manager of the Global Technology Centre at Chevron. They will relate examples of where technology has succeeded and failed with engaging the public in relation to the petroleum industry.
The PESGB Stoneley Lecture is an annual outreach event which aims to excite and inspire members of the general public about topics relating to the geosciences.
Previous Stoneley Lecturers have included Professor Iain Stewart, Hugh Dennis, Dallas Campbell and Sir Tony Robinson.
The Lecture Series is named in honour of Professor Bob Stoneley, an early champion of the PESGB who was a highly eminent petroleum geologist, teacher and Professor at Imperial College.
Tickets are £15 at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/6th-annual-pesgb-stoneley-lecture-with-professor-robert-winston-tickets-20945633955 Student tickets will be available on the door for £5 (will require proof of student status)
