Here in the Pacific Northwest, our extended Summer has finally made it’s exit leaving us with gray skies and cloudy weather. For better or for worse, Fall has rushed in and for those of us with web’ed feet (the duck kind, not the internet kind), Fall gives us a break from outdoor activities and a chance to curl up around the fireplace with a good book. Of course for preppers, a good book is usually one that has to do with survival skills or the survival experience.
As luck would have it, I have a nice stack of books all ready to go. Most have been sent to me by author’s for review but a few I have acquired on my own. Being true to my word, I have culled out the losers (and there were some), and present for you my Backdoor Survival Fall Reading List.
Before I do that, however, I want to tell you about my upcoming book festival.
What the heck is a book festival?
Glad you asked. Over the course of the next couple of months, I have lined up author interviews as well as book giveaways. Lots of them and to the tune of one a week. Now how cool is that? These will be followed by my own book reviews but that may take some time since as you know, I actually do read all of the books that I review in their entirely. No flip through good enough reviews from the Survival Woman!
So enough said. Let’s get started on the Fall Reading List which is presented below in no particular order.
The Backdoor Survival Fall Reading List – Non-Fiction
Contact!: A Tactical Manual for Post Collapse Survival: This is one of those something for everyone books with information to enhance security, tactics and survival skills of law-abiding citizens who are faced with civil disorder, lawlessness, violence and physical threat in a post-collapse environment. The manual will take you from self-defense as an individual, team and family, both pre and post collapse, and move on to tactics, techniques, procedures and training that can be used by tactical teams that you may need to form in order to survive. (Author: Max Velocity)
Disaster Preparedness: Urban Preppers with Kids, Pets & Parents; Disaster Survival for the Family: In the author’s words, Urban Preppers is the emergency response preparedness guide for the rest of us who are not Bear Grylls survivalist types but regular people from all walks of life and of every, age gender and socioeconomic level. This book covers minor annoyances including power outages and garbage collection stoppages all the way to civil unrest and natural and man-made disasters. Note that the Kindle version (you don’t need a Kindle to read it) is only $2.99 or free for Amazon Prime members. (Author: James Mushen)
Survive Any Food Crisis: This is a complete A-Z guide on food prepping during uncertain times. You’ll discover everything you need to know and do in order for you and your family to be safe in the event of a food crisis. It addresses the essential foods to store, how to store them and how to create a long term survival plan. You will also learn how you can start stocking up on vital food supplies for pennies on the dollar. With this manual are some pretty nifty bonus books on water, medicinal plants, and food preparation. (Author: Rod Davidson)
Now just so you know, I have already read Rod’s book and was thrilled to be able to provide some input into certain sections having to do with long term food storage. As a thank you, the author is putting together a special bonus for Backdoor Survival readers which will become available soon.
The Prepper Next Door: A Practical Guide For Disaster And Emergency Planning: If you are fairly new to prepping, this book will give you a heads up on a myriad of topics. It features a practical approach to prepping using modest steps to prepare for emergencies and to reach your prepping goals. Each chapter begins with the basics and then moves on to a level that covers the topic in depth. Plus, it is all done with a bit of a sense of humor making the read fun as well as instructional. (Author: Charlie Palmer)
Deep Web Secrecy and Security – Guide to the Deep Web and Beyond: Everything you do on the Internet – every site you visit, every image or file you download, every email or message you send or receive – is logged on a computer somewhere. In a perfect world, we wouldn’t need to worry. But this is not a perfect world. In this book you will learn about the “deep web” and how to use it to protect you and your family’s interests as well as your views and your freedoms. (Author: Conrad Jaeger)
Broken Web The Coming Collapse of the Internet: Viruses abound, cyber attacks are in the wings, and malware is eating our hard drives (and web sites) alive. Time to ask the Big Ugly Question: Is society creating its own worst nightmare through over-reliance on the Internet? My BFF George Ure wrote this so what can I say, it is eye-opening and scary but something you need to read so that you are not caught unaware. (Author: George Ure)
The Weekend Homesteader: A Twelve-Month Guide to Self-Sufficiency : This book is for people who would love to homestead but who may lack the time or the space. Organized by month, it includes 48 projects to get you going as a “Weekend Homesteader”. (Author: Anna Hess)
The Home Schooled Shootist: Training to Fight with a Carbine: This is another great book from the prolific Joe Nobody. This time he writes for the average citizen who has mastered the basic functions of their weapon but want drills and exercised so that he or she can learn more and become more proficient on their own. It assumes the reader has solid remedial skills and a firm understanding of firearms safety but beyond that, the only requirement is the willingness to put some time into practice. (Author: Joe Nobody)
The Backdoor Survival Fall Reading List – Fiction
BOCA CHITA: Prepare. Escape. Survive.: A retired baby boomer with a powerful survivalist streak, manages to avoid contamination from the deadly NOEL virus, released worldwide by terrorists on Christmas Eve. Within 3 days, 99.9% of the world’s population succumbs. He decides to bug-out in his survival-prepared, live-aboard trawler to Boca Chita Key, an uninhabited island seventeen miles from Miami, where he uses his wits, resilience and mechanical know-how to homestead as a self-sufficient hermit. Wow, now if that does not head you under the covers with a flashlight to read with, nothing will! (Author: Lance Long)
299 Days: The Preparation: Grant Matson is a lawyer, father, and suburbanite husband who awakens to the fragility of modern society and embarks on a personal journey that introduces him to a world of self-reliance and liberation. This book depicts the inner struggles Grant must face as he exists in a social system he recognizes as unsustainable and on the verge of collapse, but one in which he has built his life around. Follow Grant’s transition from a self-perceived “sheeple” to a full-blown “prepper.” Will his fears come true? Is he an extremist? What if nothing happens? What if something does? This book is the first of a ten book series written by a fellow resident of Washington State. (Author: Glen Tate)
299 Days: The Collapse: Yep, there is more. This is book number two of the “299 Days” series. The government stops working, guns and ammo are in high demand, and a trip to the gas station becomes a mission rather than an errand. Chaos and fear that begins to envelop the country begins to strip all of the characters of what they know to normal, and will require them to question what they will stand for, what they will stand up against, and, most importantly, who they will stand with. (Author: Glen Tate)
A Survival Story: Part I: From my online friend, John Rourke at Modern Online Survival comes the first installment of the fictional daily journal written by “Jed”, a 39 year old man who lives in a small city in South Carolina. Like many, Jed recently started thinking about his life and the mistakes he has made and wants to come up with a plan to determine where his life his headed. Hi is an active survivalist and has stocked up on a lot of supplies with an emphasis on the basics of “beans, bullets and band-aids”. Follow along as he chronicles his story or survival and more. (Author: John Rourke)
11 Steps to Living a Strategic Life: What? You haven’t picked up a copy of 11 steps yet? This little book will provide you with the motivation to get started or stay on track with a self-reliant life. 11 Steps to Living a Strategic Life, co-authored with my long time pal, George Ure, and can be purchased directly, on Amazon or at Barnes & Noble. Only $2.99.
Bartering With Desperate People: There is a lot of interest in bartering among prepper-types. I am not sure I agree with the “desperate” part of the title since realistically, this $7.00 e-Book is more about negotiating the very best deal in such a way that all parties to the transaction are happy. And we all know that bartering is going to become a real issue at some point down the road. What to barter? Read 40 Items to Barter in a Post-Collapse World for some ideas.
The Final Word
What started out as a way to share some great reading ideas with my readers has become so much more. In addition to the Fall survival reading list, there are interviews, reviews and giveaways happening over the next few months and beyond. I owe a big thanks to the authors above that have graciously put up with my questions about their work and with the numerous emails back and forth as I have probed them for answers on various topics of interest to all of you.
I am looking forward to sharing these interviews with you and yes, don’t forget, starting this weekend I will be announcing a weekly book giveaway. Until then, be well and be safe
Enjoy your next adventure through common sense and thoughtful preparation!
