(Before It's News)

Saturday found me buried elbows deep in our oven. I hate to admit it’s been a while since I completely deep cleaned my oven. I think this is one of those things that can be so frustrating to clean in a kitchen. This is not a task for the light hearted. I scrubbed until my hands flat out hurt! When my son laid down for a nap, I dove right in. To really complete this task well, I recommend blocking off a two and a half hour period.
I have a self cleaning oven so I decided not to use any of the traditional oven cleaners on it. I preheated my oven to 350 degrees and filled a small baking dish with about a cup of ammonia. I put that in my oven for thirty minutes and it evaporated. This helps to loosen some of the gunk. I removed all of my racks and got down to cleaning.
I had plenty of baked on stuff at the bottom of my oven. I am terribly ashamed to show this picture!
The glass on the door was also pretty dirty. In between the two pieces of glass was somehow nasty too…
I used a scraper to remove most of the cooked on gunk. Be really careful to not scratch your glass or oven surfaces. You just want to get the cooked on mess.
I ended up using four buckets of Pine Sol and hot water before I finished this job…along with three Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. They helped so very much!
I carefully unscrewed the two screws holding the door together so I could clean everything. It’s unbelievable how unexposed areas can get so nasty.
When I was done scrubbing, it looked like a brand new oven!
Both pieces of glass were shining like new….I was so very proud of my efforts at this point!
I scrubbed my cooking racks and put those back in. I lined my oven with two pieces of aluminum foil to prevent the bottom from being so messy. Now when I have drips, I can switch out the foil.
I scrubbed the pan drawer on the inside and out (couldn’t believe the dust on the sides of that thing), the sides and back of the actual oven, and the stove top. I soaked the stove pans in a hot water/ammonia solution for about ten minutes and they came out looking like new. I also moved the stove out, cleaned under it, mopped the floor under it, and wiped the dusty power cord. I also cleaned the hood and light.
And she shined like new!
My kitchen smelled so much fresher when this job was complete. It was well worth the two and half hour effort. Now I’ve made it even easier to maintain with the foil. Bring on the holiday baking and turkey roasting!
