(Before It's News)

NEW YORK—In its mission to restore the traditional culture of China, Shen Yun Performing Arts stunned audience members at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on Sunday afternoon.

Daniel Zellan, a musician, lauded the performance’s unique orchestra that joins together Western and Chinese instruments.

“I thought the music was wonderful. I loved the traditional aspect of the music,” he said.

While it primarily uses classical Chinese dance to convey the inner meanings of China’s traditional culture, each piece is accompanied by the aforementioned orchestra. According to the company’s website, it uses the Western philharmonic orchestra as the foundation and leads with Chinese instruments.

“I particularly liked that because I am very used to the Western orchestra. So I loved having the traditional instruments of China there in the music as well—a lot,” Mr. Zellan said.

Shen Yun also includes several renowned solo singers, who use the bel canto technique.

“The opera singers were outstanding. [Soprano Geng Haolan] at the end was absolutely stunning,” he said.

Shen Yun seeks to restore traditional Chinese culture and the country’s spirituality that was lost under the six-decade-long communist regime, the company says. The dance pieces in Shen Yun draw upon stories and legends passed down in China.

The performance, Mr. Zellan said, has “wonderful messages,” that people “should not forget.” Adding further, he said he gleaned that “goodness [is] taking over evil and we should be aware of that.”

But overall, the performance is a “wonderful experience of Chinese culture [and] the beauty of the Chinese culture,” Mr. Zellan said.

“That is why I came here, to experience that,” he said.

Shen Yun Performing Arts, based in New York, has three touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world, with a mission to revive traditional Chinese culture. Upcoming performances in the United States include Chattanooga, Tennessee, on April 24, and Columbus, Ohio, on April 26 and April 27.
