The naughty goings on in Cock Lane and death by ventriloquism in a maze of alleyways near a mysterious house emblazoned with bulls heads were among the tales told by Robert Kingham on the Peter Ackroyd Charity Pub Crawl, which I went on last weekend. Although saying a pub crawl was all done for the altruistic purposes of raising money for charity might in itself sound like a cock and bull story, it was in fact for a good cause – the money from the tickets sold went to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Robert Kingham is one of the people behind Minimum Labyrinth, which, as the website says, puts on “creative paroxysms [leading] down lanes of history, literature, philosophy, music, mathematics and beer”.

I’ve been on a few Minimum Labyrinth excursion into London’s history and mysteries over the years (see below for links to my reviews) and wasn’t going to miss this one. It did, as you might expect, involve visiting quite a few pubs. In between the beer-breaks we wandered down London’s lesser known passageways, stopping in interesting spots to listen to Robert reading from Peter Ackroyd’s London: The Biography.

It was jolly good fun. If you are sad that you missed it, don’t worry as there’s another chance to take part this weekend. On Saturday 25 April The Peter Ackroyd Charity Pub Crawl is having its second leg.

The walk takes about eight hours and includes about eight pubs. It goes from London’s Clerkenwell to St Giles. Tickets are £20 per person, 100% of which goes to Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
