Kittens Vs. Seedlings
I have my seedlings starting under a protective dome of plastic in the south-facing bay window next to a jungle of other houseplants. So far, so good. But when a couple of cukes got rather large, I put them outside it in pots with a loose plastic lid perched over them so they weren't as tempting to the kittens, but had room to grow a bit.
Didn't work!
The kittens discovered these cucumbers and bit the heads off! Then knocked 'em down for good measure!
Once it warms up even a little bit I can put plants outside in the mini-greenhouse, but its not quite right for that just yet, and as my seedlings pop out and have to be transferred to pots…? This is going to get sticky very quickly!
I love raising kittens, but that first year is totally disrupted by feline shenanigans! They get into everything and manage to tip over, rip down, or dig out all sorts of things. Every kitten destroys a roll of toilet paper at least once. Every kitten will chew a cord and kill a phone charger or pair of headphones at least once. Its the nature of the beast we attempt to tame. I'm home and can squirt them with water bottles– but I have to catch them first, and inevitably I won't be there much of the time and damage is done.
Time will pass, and the weather will warm and they'll get to go out and explore the back yard and they'll mature and the house won't take so much abuse at the paws of adorable kittens for much longer, but in the meantime, it can be pretty tricky to protect things like seedlings!
