Wait Out the Apocalypse in a Luxury Missile Silo

If hunkering down in a basement with walls of canned food and a shotgun isn’t your cup of tea for a post-apocalyptic survival plan, the team at Survival Condo may have what you’re looking for.
Using an old missile silo, they created an off-grid subterranean luxury resort that’s built to withstand nuclear attacks, civil unrest, and provide a place where you can watch TV if the rest of the country loses power.
It also has a 50,000-gallon pool and spa area, a movie theater, lounge, exercise room, rock climbing wall, and indoor shooting range. If you come down with the flu, there’s a medical facility; and you can even take your dog for a walk in its indoor dog park.
Residents will be moving into the first Atlas Missile Silo—which is already sold out—by the end of the year. And with the success of the project, the team is now beginning development on their second silo, with completion planned a year from now.
Rent for a 900-square-foot half-floor unit goes for $3 million.
The project was started by engineer and software developer Larry Hall. A press release from Survival Condo says reassuringly that its clients “are not your typical ‘survival nuts’” and are mainly “successful, educated, and well-to-do individuals who simply want peace of mind in the event of a natural or manmade disaster.”
Hall claims the silo resort is among the strongest man-made structures ever built, with nuclear weapon-proof walls of thick epoxy hardened concrete—which is only fitting, since the silo was originally built in 1960 to hold and protect Atlas nuclear missiles.
The silos are in undisclosed locations in Kansas. Yet according to the press release, the residents do not live in the silo year-round, and will instead use it as their go-to point in the case of a disaster.
According to the press release, while Hall wouldn’t give specific details, the silo also has “full military grade security that encompasses both lethal and non-lethal measures to ensure the safety of the residents and the facility no matter what the threat.”
