Reader Question – Rebuilding Society

Welcome to Barter Town
Today, I’ll respond to an email that I got from a reader about when it will be time to get together and rebuild society. I appreciate the questions I get from all of you and want to encourage all of you to keep sending me your questions and topic ideas.

As I go about my prepping for each new day, storing and learning, practicing, one question keeps ringing within me. As collapse and the swelling tyranny grows all these things play into how to prepare, how long to prepare for, and how to not only provide for security for my family but for those who will come after me.
When, where, will the call go out to come together and reestablish a governing system? I think each and every person preparing is a great thing but to have the idea that each of us will remain independent and stand up to the tyranny is hollow at best and i believe would fall into what the pressing elite would want making it much easier to pick off each individual, each small group, each collective at will and systematically. People become more afraid each day of one another and organizations.
Each passing day brings this question upfront in my mind Where When do We the People come together meeting face to face organizing, establishing and standing together? We go about the back channels writing and bringing forth our individual ideas and beliefs, some break out to the forefront but all still remain individualistic lumped into a grouping by the establishment.

Jack,
You’re not crazy and do raise an interesting question. However, I don’t really have a definitive answer to what’s been plaguing you… To say that each one of us is an individual would be a huge understatement. Our individualist tendencies will most certainly come through the future breakdown with any and all of us that have prepared to come out the other side with enough fight still in us to begin rebuilding.
When will the time come to pull together and begin to rebuild society? Let me say first, I don’t think we have even seen anything but the very early stages of the collapse that is sure to come eventually. We have not bottomed out and with all the government spending going on currently, it may take years yet before we face a real version of the fiscal cliff. I have been waiting patiently for the day of reckoning to arrive for nearly a decade and a half. I can’t believe that we can keep the train on the tracks at all, much less for years in to the future. It defy’s reason to think that we can just keep going on like we are but here we are, still going?
Let’s jump ahead and make the leap into the future to a time after we have seen the system collapse. I mean really collapse! The days when the larger government bureaucracies have expended all of their silver bullets and are largely just acting as a figure head, with us just being left alone to fend for our selves the best we can. In my mind this will be the time to begin the rebuilding.
In all honesty, I believe the rebuilding of society will begin at different times depending on each areas situation. In many areas of the country we will see society continue at the local level almost from day one.
For many folks in the rural areas, there are already established barter networks and farmers markets. On second thought, many areas, in general already have these networks in place… The inner cities are coming along nicely with their community gardens, organic/loca-vore co-ops and Saturday markets. All of these local associations will play a major role in getting society back on its feet.
The fact is that commerce is a major player in what keeps society going during even the good times. Where there are people, there will be needs to be filled, this needs based economy will be the beginnings of our new society. The quicker the current system falls and is dealt with, the sooner it will be time to rebuild at the local level with a more reality based system that will certainly bloom when it is finally given the chance.
I believe these local societal networks will start to get established as soon as the people in the area feel safe coming together to trade. I feel confident that the rural folks will get their act together quicker. On the whole they are largely well armed and have lower rates of violence and crime to deal with now, even before the train comes off the tracks.
The cities on the other hand have the existing gang related issues as well as any problems that will spring up after the collapse or because of the collapse to get under control before they will see a movement to rebuild get off the ground. Each area has both pluses and minuses and the cities, once they are able to restart their local economies, they will have more people and skills to draw from.
The fact is that even from the early days of the collapse, people will begin to reach out to those around them to establish allegiances and support networks. In my opinion, it will be these initial informal cooperation agreements that will one day be the start of a new society, local of course but still the society that will need to come about to replace the broken one that we will have lost to history.
The overall take away from this post I hope you all get is that we need to prepare and keep preparing until the time comes that we will need to draw off of our supplies to bridge the gap between the broken society of today and the new much more local society of tomorrow!
