Joseph Hancock asks: “What do you think about putting a spile in your Bob to tap trees for water, particularly maple?”
Commenter 1: “and birch and oregon grape. At the right time of year no problem. the oregon grape you can just bend over and cut the tree and let the water run into a container or your mouth. In the spring time I have cut down birch trees and the water coming from them is amazing. It lasted for almost 2 weeks.”
Commenter 2: “I couldn’t hurt if your in that area that you can do it. Make sure to recognize the source of the water and if it’s a maple tree you can ad it to hot tea or coffee.”
Commenter 3: “If you use a spile you’ll need the auger and brace. It’s easier if you learn traditional hatchet tapping. It’s less intrusive to the tree and less gear to carry.”
Commenter 4: “It would take a bit of time to get enough to drink and drinking the sap from a maple tree would make you thirsty due to the sugar content.”
