Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev condemned President Donald Trump’s decision to strike a Syrian airbase linked to a poison weapon attack which killed scores of Syrian civilians, including children.
“This military action is a clear indication of the US President’s extreme dependency on the opinion of the Washington establishment, the one that the new president strongly criticized in his inauguration speech,” Medvedev wrote on Facebook Friday morning.
“Instead of an overworked statement about a joint fight against the biggest enemy, ISIS, the Trump administration proved that it will fiercely fight the legitimate Syrian government, in a tough contradiction with international law and without UN approval, in violation of its own procedures stipulating that the Congress must first be notified of any military operation unrelated to aggression against the US,” he added. “On the verge of a military clash with Russia.”
Medvedev noted that Trump’s decision to strike the Syrian airbase had “completely ruined relations” between the U.S. and Russia and has empowered ISIS.
“Soon after his victory, I noted that everything would depend on how soon Trump’s election promises would be broken by the existing power machine. It took only two and a half months,” the Russian prime minister concluded.
After intelligence reports showed a strong connection between Assad’s regime and the chemical weapons attack, Trump stated Thursday night that further action had to be taken.
“Years of previous attempts at changing Assad’s behavior have all failed and failed very dramatically,” the president said from his Mar-a-Lago resort.
“Even beautiful babies were cruelly murdered in this very barbaric attack,” he added. “No child of God should ever suffer such horror.”
World leaders commended Trump for his decision to take swift military action.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Trump “sent a strong and clear message today that the use and spread of chemical weapons will not be tolerated.”
The British government said in a statement that the strikes were “an appropriate response to the barbaric chemical weapons attack launched by the Syrian regime, and is intended to deter further attacks.”
The U.S. strike reportedly killed at least seven people. It is Trump’s first major foreign policy decision since assuming the presidency.
“Russian forces were notified in advance of the strike using the established deconfliction line,” Pentagon spokesman Jeff Davis said in a statement Thursday. “U.S. military planners took precautions to minimize risk to Russian or Syrian personnel located at the airfield.”
