As Western Journalism has previously reported, Michelle Obama’s path toward forcing Americans to be healthy has taken some unusual detours along the way. Aside from the roundly panned implementation of school nutrition mandates that resulted in wasted food, wasted money and hungry kids, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has followed her lead by attempting to change how all citizens eat.
The latest example came this week, as warmer weather across the nation had Americans looking forward to camping and other outdoor activities. For many, the traditional preparation of one iconic snack – the s’more – is a seasonal highlight.
On its recipe webpage, the USDA offered its take on the chocolate, marshmallow and graham cracker concoction, replacing the first two ingredients with strawberries and low-fat vanilla yogurt. A USDA-related Twitter profile, ChooseMyPlate.gov, shared a link to the recipe along with its endorsement of the snack as an “easy treat kids will love.”
Judging from the response from Twitter users, the yogurt-infused update of a classic treat was far from a unanimous hit.
“You’ve got to be kidding!” one critic wrote. “S’mores are a national tradition for America’s families. Please concentrate on important things!”
While some acknowledged that the USDA-promoted snack looks tasty enough, most were adamant that it should not be called a s’more.
“Please tell Michelle Obama that THIS is not a SMORE!” responded another Twitter user. “These are strawberry yogurt cracker sandwiches. Put this on a campfire.”
At least one individual took a page out of the leftist playbook in criticizing the revamped s’more idea.
“Notice how they took out the chocolate,” the user wrote. “Racists.”
