Democrat candidate for President and self proclaimed socialist Senator from Vermont, Bernie Sanders visited a Christian university today and told students that our founders were racists and that the USA is inherently a racist nation.
It is a bit unusual that a Democrat would even accept the invitation to speak to a Christian university, but with his claims that the USA is hopelessly racist, Sanders didn’t disappoint from offering the typical anti-American rhetoric that other often Democrats indulge.
On Monday, Sanders accepted the invitation to speak to a large audience at Liberty University, the college founded in Virginia by Moral Majority leader Jerry Falwell. During the questions and answer segment of the program, the Vermont Senator insisted that it was a “fact” that America was founded by racists and upon racist principles.
Sanders was asked by the moderator what he’d do about the deteriorating race relations in our country if he became president. His reply was typically liberal in its contempt for our founding.
That is an excellent question. I would hope and I believe that every person in this room today understands that it is unacceptable to judge people, to discriminate against people based on the color of their skin. And I would also say that as a nation, the truth is, that a nation in which many ways was created–and I’m sorry to have to say this–from way back, on racist principles, we have, a long way as a nation.
While our founders were certainly flawed men of their time, the system they created set the table for improving race relations and growing human rights. And it was a shining example to the world for it.
During his speech,Sanders also remarked obliquely on how odd it is that a Democrat would speak at a Christian university. “I came here today because I believe from the bottom of my heart that it’s vitally important for people who hold different views to be able to engage in a civil discourse,” Sanders said.
In marked contrast to how conservatives are treated on other college campuses, the students and others who attended Sanders’ address at Liberty University gave him a warm and respectful hearing.
