Two Michigan women were likely left shocked after the woman they harshly criticized bought their coffees.
Dianne Hoffmeyer said she was motivated to do what she did to be a good example for her toddler daughter.
Hoffmeyer stopped in her local Tim Horton’s coffee shop in For Gratiot, Michigan, to get some doughnut holes for her teething daughter and a coffee for herself. As she waited in line with her child, she overhead two middle-aged women behind her making insulting comments about her hair and her weight. Hoffmeyer told a local news station she didn’t know the women and their comments were unprovoked.
“‘Oh, look at her hair, it’s nasty looking and the roots are coming through’,” she recalled the women saying.
“‘Oh, she’s a whale, oh, the whale needs to eat’,” they continued.
The women didn’t know Hoffmeyer had lost 177 pounds. The sting of their words was almost too much for her, Hoffmeyer said.
“I instantly started to cry, because it hurts. I don’t know the women. I don’t know why they would choose to say something like that,” she said.
While no one would blame her for lashing out at the duo, Hoffmeyer chose another option. She told the cashier waiting on her that she would pay for the women’s coffees as well.
Hoffmeyer never spoke to the women and didn’t even tell them she paid for their coffees. She walked out and sat in her car, continuing to cry, Hoffmeyer said.
Her story went viral after Hoffmeyer posted the details on Facebook. She said it was important to her to pay kindness forward rather than impulsively reacting. Hoffmeyer said she would welcome the chance to really talk to the women who insulted her so badly.
“I’d like to buy them another cup of coffee, and talk to them. And explain to them how it made me feel,” she said.
