Donald Trump has hit his highest level of support among Republican voters, fueled by major increases in support from woman and college graduates and continued increased in his core constituencies, according to a new CNN/ORC poll released Thursday.
The key numbers:
Meanwhile, Trump’s base and many conservatives continue to support him.
Ben Carson, at 19 percent, is second among all GOP candidates. Carson’s numbers show a 10-point increase since August.
The outsider factor continues to dominate the Republican contest. Trump and Carson combined total 51 percent of the vote. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was third at 9 percent. Sen. Ted Cruz, T-TX, was fourth at 7 percent. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker were each at 5%. All other Republican candidates polled 3 percent or less.
As Republican frontrunner Trump gains, Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton falls.
A Quinnipiac University poll out Thursday had Clinton trialing Sen. Bernie Sander, D-VT, 41 percent to 40 percent. Vice President Joe Biden polled at 12 percent.
“Sen. Bernie Sanders has become the Eugene McCarthy of 2016,” said Quinnipiac pollster Peter Brown. “He is the candidate of the Democratic left, against his own party’s bosses and their prized presidential candidate, Secretary Hillary Clinton.”
