The parents of journalist James Foley, who was beheaded by ISIS operative “Jihadi John”, took little solace in learning of John’s reported death by a U.S. drone strike on Thursday, but rather charged the Obama administration with not doing enough to free American hostages.
Diane Foley, mother of the journalist, told ABC News: “This huge effort to go after this deranged man filled with hate when they can’t make half that effort to save the hostages while those young Americans were still alive,” said Foley, “It’s unfortunate that the government doesn’t get it. They think it gives us solace, but it doesn’t,” she added.

Foley has been critical in the past of the administration’s lack of attention given to freeing American hostages. “I think our efforts to get Jim freed were an ‘annoyance’ to the U.S. government,” she told CNN last year. “Jim was killed in the most horrific way. He was sacrificed because of just a lack of coordination, lack of communication, lack of prioritization.”
The family posted a statement on the website James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, which reads, in part:
It is a very small solace to learn that Jihadi John may have been killed by the U.S. government.
His death does not bring Jim back. If only so much effort had been given to finding and rescuing Jim and the other hostages who were subsequently murdered by ISIS, they might be alive today…
The Foundation is committed to defending the rights of every American citizen by advocating for the safe release of Americans kidnapped abroad, advancing safety measures for freelance journalists in conflict zones, and providing underprivileged youth with access to education.
As reported by Western Journalism, Pentagon officials reported on Friday that Mohamed Emwazi, “Jihadi John,” was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Syria. “We are 99 percent sure we got him,” a military official told Fox News regarding the British citizen who turned against the West. The terrorist became infamous for his appearances in ISIS videos that showed Western hostages, including James Foley, being beheaded.
