A short-lived innovative attempt to display clothing at a Las Vegas-area Walmart had many shouting “racist”, leading the store taking down the display as well as a host of social media commentators wondering where racism-mania will stop.
The fuss began last week when someone working at a Walmart in North Las Vegas put together an unusual clothing display. Four dressed mannequins were hung directly from the store’s ceiling, where they dangled for all shoppers to see.
The display pushed the buttons of some who saw it and media outlets went in search of outrage.
TV station KTNV found a man who said the mannequins looked like “four black items hanging from the ceiling as if they were four black people.” KTNV reports.
Some News found a woman who said the display seemed, to her, “a little like the Ku Klux Klan, black people hanging from the ceiling.”
After KTNV reported on the display, and did its man-on-the-street interviews, the display was taken down without any comments from the store.
As the story spread across social media, scoffing replaced outrage. Comments posted to the web site of KGTV in San Diego illustrate the reaction to the racism allegations.
“This is a non-story. Enough with the race baiting!!” commented Michael Hawkins.
“Get over it people!!! They are shirts hanging for display. Some people just like the attention and like to be drama!” wrote Manny Fernandez.
“Offended by clothing…Not what’s on the clothing, But clothing being displayed. And not in a bad manner. It’s like hanging clothing in your closet. I’m assuming that’s racist too,” wrote Jessica Lynne.
Poster Paul Green summed up the fuss this way: “We are doomed as a society.”
