Praising the front-running Democratic presidential candidate at a debate among Republicans seeking the office is likely to go wrong, no matter how faint and fleeting the words.
Maria Bartiromo found that out Tuesday night when the Fox Business Network moderator received a chorus of boos from the crowd attending the Republican presidential debate in Milwaukee.
“Hillary Clinton is the clear front runner for the Democratic nomination,” Bartiromo said in phrasing a question to Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. “If she is indeed the nominee, you will be facing a candidate with an impressive resume.”
The word “impressive” had barely left Bartiromo’s lips when a chorus of booing filtered through the crowd.
Bartiromo continued as the booing drifted away: “She was the first lady of the United States, a U.S. senator from New York, and secretary of state under Barack Obama. She has arguably more experience, certainly more time in government than almost all of you on stage tonight.”
Then she reached her question.
“Why should the American people trust you to lead this country, even though she has been so much closer to the office?”
Rubio said the election was about change.
“This election is actually a generational choice, a choice about what kind of nation we will be in the 21st century,” he said.
” … every day brings news of a new humiliation for America — many the direct response — direct consequence of decisions made when Hillary Clinton was the secretary of the — of state,” Rubio said. He later added, “This nation is going to turn the page, and that’s what this election should be about.”
Sen. Ted Cruz said experience doesn’t matter when the results are terrible.
” … she’s got a lot of experience, but her policies have proven disastrous. If you look at foreign policy, every region in the world has gotten worse,” he said.
“Under her leadership, we abandon the nation of Israel. Under her leadership, radical Islamic terrorism has been on to the rise. Under her leadership, and Obama’s leadership, Iran is getting $100 billion dollars, and on the verge of getting a nuclear weapon,” Cruz said.
Once Rubio and Cruz were done with their critiques, moderator Neil Cavuto sought to move on.
“OK, I think it’s fair to say you’re not fans of Hillary Clinton’s resume. Alright, Mr. Trump …”
Donald Trump had the final word.
“We are not,” he shot back before the debate moved to other issues.
In point of fact, Clinton’s governmental experience covers 12 years, Politifact noted in August, not counting the eight years she was first lady. That’s actually less than Rubio himself, who has served 17 years in elected office, Politifact reported.
