When Jessa Duggar Seewald and Ben Seewald searched for a name for their firstborn, they wanted a strong name that would resound with Christian heroism.
Having done just that, it stands to reason they also received ridicule.
The couple announced Wednesday that the boy’s name is Spurgeon Elliot Seewald. As some turned to Wikipedia to learn about the people behind those names, others went straight for mockery.

Jessa Duggar Seewald REALLY should have checked Urban Dictionary before naming her baby. I'm DYING. https://t.co/4GKphffBpt

“Jessa Duggar Seewald REALLY should have checked Urban Dictionary before naming her baby. I’m DYING,” chimed in The Hollywood Sigh via Twitter.
The derision denigrates those who devoted their lives to their faith and whose names will live on through the couple’s choice of names.
Charles Spurgeon was a highly influential 19th Century Baptist preacher who preached against liberalism in the church and was a prolific writer.
“He had a big impact on our lives,” Ben Seewald said. “His writings and his sermons and books are still around today, and they just continue to impact many, many people.”
As for his middle name, “Eliot” honors missionaries Jim and Elisabeth Eliot. “Jim Elliot was a missionary to South America, and he actually died on the mission field,” Ben Seewald said. “His wife, Elisabeth Elliot, she actually went back to the tribe after her husband’s death, and she continued to take the gospel there.” Elisabeth Elliot died in June, he said.
In addition to names that honor Christian heroes, he has a nickname that is special to his parents — Quincy.
“His nickname has been Quincy since we first found out we were pregnant,” Jessa Seewald said.
Above all, he is a tiny bit of life to light up the lives of his parents
“He’s a precious little bundle of joy,” Jessa Seewald said. “We’re so blessed to call him ours.”
