(Before It's News)

According to CBS affiliate KTVT in Dallas/Ft. Worth, former Democratic presidential candidate Jim Webb may be ready to join the race again as an independent.

With the Democratic race up for grabs — Hillary Clinton winning Iowa, and Bernie Sanders winning New Hampshire — Webb may believe he still has a chance to win. Expecting to address those questions today at a press conference in North Texas, Webb will address the Dallas World Affairs Council at the Belo Mansion this afternoon.

Webb, at the luncheon, is reportedly giving a speech entitled, “The Five Most Important Principles for Foreign Policy.” Webb, who started the race for the presidency in July, dropped out of the race in October, reportedly voicing displeasure over the Democratic Party’s involvement in the election.

According to CBSDFW, Webb has made statements over the last few months that an Independent candidate is necessary in this year’s race for the presidency.

Webb, whose father served in the Air Force, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1968, became an officer in the Marines, served as a company commander during Vietnam and was awarded the Navy Cross, the Silver Star Medal, two Bronze Star Medals and two Purple Hearts.

In 1984 he was appointed as the assistant secretary of defense for reserve affairs, and in 1987 became the Secretary of the Navy. In addition to his prestigious military career, Webb was a professor of literature at the U.S. Naval Academy, had a long career as a journalist, screenwriter, and is a prolific writer, penning more than 10 books.

Webb served as a Virginia Senator from 2007-13 and has a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

If the rumors are confirmed and Webb is re-entering the race as an Independent, it is unclear from which party Webb will draw voters. With his distinguished military background, assumptions could be made he would draw Republican voters away from front-runners Donald Trump and Ted Cruz. It is also possible Democrats may be drawn away from supporting Clinton and Sanders.
