Thirteen Indian fishermen sailing from Akkarpettai were reportedly been arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy near Trincomalee on Wednesday.The news reached the fishermen’s village around the midnight, the fishermen, who embarked into two boats on Sunday, were arrested at Pulmedu. According to the sources from Fisheries Department, they have been detained in Trincomalee.
Panchayatar of Akkarapettai, Mr. Thiruvalarchelvan told that the news was telecasted on the Sri Lankan news channels and communicated to fisher folks at Akkarapettai.
Fishermen’s Chased Away
Fishermen from Rameswaram, who had returned to the shore yesterday, complained that they were been “chased away” by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel’s, Sources claim that as against the 441 tokens issued by fisheries authorities, there were only 74 boats went out for fishing.
Other fishermen’s haven’t went to the sea fearing a repercussion in the wake of the attack on Mr. Thirukumaran Nadesan, who is the husband of Sri Lankan MP Nirupama Rajapaksa, by some Tamil activists at Rameswaram on Wednesday. Though all the fishermen were back safely, few of them claimed that they were been prevented from fishing in their traditional areas in and around Kachchatheevu.
