DEBKAfile was founded by a team of journalists in June 2000 as an independent Internet Web site, providing an intelligence and security news service. April 5, 2017, 8:59 AM (IDT)
Reports on Wednesday said that about 150 people are now believed to have been killed in Tuesday's poison gas attack by the Syrian military on the northwestern town of Khan Sheikhun. Hundreds of others were wounded. An unidentified American official was quoted as saying that the attack appeared to involve the use of sarin. On Tuesday night, the US, Britain and France submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council condemning the attack as well as the use of poison gas in the war in Syria. The draft also calls on UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to report to the global body each month on the cooperation by the Syrian military with UN inspectors investigating the use of chemical weapons in Syria. The Security Council is to hold an emergency meeting later in the day.
Meanwhile, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov claimed Wednesday that the incident was result of the Syrian air force bombing a rebel ammunition depot where chemical weapons were stored. The Syrian regime continued to deny that its forces were responsible.
Our unique angle on these subjects – and strong intelligence dimension – has earned DEBKAfile a global reputation and a steady readership – which skyrockets in times of crisis.
