A veteran FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) member came face to face with kidnap victims during an emotional court hearing in Colombia on Wednesday. Heli Mejia Mendoza, aka “Carcelero” or “Jailer” is believed to have held numerous high-profile FARC kidnap victims in rebel jungle prisons.Captured in 2008 by Colombian authorities, Mendoza apologised to his victims at a hearing in the city of Villavicencio. [Heli Mejia Mendoza, FARC Member]: “Looking at the error I committed and all the injuries I have caused I am sorry, I apologise.” Mendoza is said to have confessed to working for the guerilla group for decades and being the FARC's jailer. [Heli Mejia Mendoza, FARC Member]: “I am sorry because I have committed much damage before the world, since the age of ten with guerillas and then with leftist guerillas.” Among Mendoza's prisoners were reportedly three US military contractors. They were kidnapped by rebels after their plane was shot down by the FARC in 2003. The American nationals were held in a guerilla-controlled jungle region and locked in makeshift cells until their release in 2008. Earlier this year FARC rebels freed 10 members of the armed forces held hostage for more than a decade, the last of a group of captives the drug-funded group had held as bargaining chips to pressure the government.
