Ukraine's jailed former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko will continue the hunger strike she launched earlier this week, according to party colleagues. She started the hunger strike to protest against alleged vote-rigging in favour of President Viktor Yanukovich's party in a weekend election. Party deputy head Oleksander Turchinov told journalists Tymoshenko plans to continue her hunger strike after visiting her in the hospital where she is being treated. [Oleksander Turchinov, Batkyvshchina Party Deputy Head]: “Of course we asked Yulia Volodymyrivna (Tymoshenko) to stop the hunger strike because her health is important for the party and I think for the whole Ukraine, but the situation in many constituencies and information how openly and cynically the results of the people's vote are beng falsified enrage her of course. The only thing she can do against it in this situation is to declare the hunger strike. That's why we couldn't convince Yulia Volodymyrivna to stop it and she will continue (hunger strike) until the Ukrainian society gives a clear assessment of what is happening now in many constituencies and regions.” Exit polls and partial results from Sunday's vote showed Yanukovich's Party of the Regions would win more than half the seats in the 450-member assembly. The united opposition bloc, which includes Tymoshenko's party, was second with about 100 seats, according to preliminary estimates.
