Recently, while talking about one of their unreliable cars of the past, someone said to me, “Well it was made in Mexico, so go figure.” When I was shopping for a used VW, I heard over and over again to check the VIN and make sure it wasn’t made in Mexico. Currently, VW is deciding where in the world the new Golf MK VII should be assembled; in Chatanooga, Mexico, or perhaps Mars.
“The capacities in Chattanooga are currently exhausted,” Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn told the paper. “If we expand there, then probably for a new SUV that is a little larger than the Tiguan.” – Automobilwoche.de
So that leaves Mexico. “But the cars will be made of dust and cactus! They’ll fall apart after 3 miles because [insert subversively racist statement about attention to detail, education, and work ethic here]. “Raaaaaaaacisttttt, Goulet.” But I think people how forget how automated the process of building automobiles is. The robots will be programmed the same as those in Germany. The specs and tolerances will be the same. The materials will come from the same suppliers, cut to the same specs, and bolted to the same spots.
Looking back, I think the “Mexican-built vs. German-built” was just an excuse that was used by people who bought unreliable cars from brands notorious for trips to the repair shop. It didn’t matter where the car was built, my Audi and VW friends made frequent trips to dealerships and repair shops for everything from automatic window failures to shock replacement (All-Road) to a sunroof that decided it preferred being moved via manual operation. In a ten-year study by Consumer Reports, the German brands were at the bottom, and not all of those were made in Mexico. So don’t swear off buying a new Golf until they build it in Silicon Valley or Aspen or something, because that just doesn’t matter. The failure is somewhere much higher up the chain than the last stop before the dealership.
