Anti-Austerity protests underway across UK – YouTube
Thousands of people have signed up for demonstrations which are the largest since the re-election of the conservative government last year. Those in attendance are making a stand against government cuts to health, social housing, jobs and education. Protest organizers accuse the government of being favorable to the privileged, saying the austerity drive has pushed ordinary Britons further into poverty. Saturday’s rallies also come amid a new crisis prime minister David Cameron is facing over the Panama leaks. Last week, activists from the so-called People’s Assembly Against Austerity called for the resignation of Cameron over links to his father’s offshore company.
Anti-government rally turns ugly in French capital Paris
The protesters staged yet another rally against the government’s proposed labor reforms. Some three-thousand people converged on the Republic Square in eastern Paris to voice their opposition to the plans. Opponents argue that the new reforms will worsen the working conditions and increase the unemployment rate. The demonstrators pledged to continue their campaign until President Francois Hollande backs down. Paris and some other French cities have been the scene of anti-government protests since March 31.
