More Police Officers Ambushed and Shot, Obama Administration Does Nothing

In the past 24 hours, four police officers have been shot. All were shot at traffic stops.
At least two of the four police officers were deliberately targeted and ambushed. An officer was shot and killed in San Antonio, Texas after someone rolled up to his cruiser as he was writing a ticket and shot him dead. Another officer was ambushed in St. Louis, Missouri and shot twice in the face. He is expected to survive.
This is unacceptable. Since the horrific attack in Dallas earlier this summer, there has been a lull in attacks targeting police officers. With four police officers being shot in four different cities over the past 24-hours, the violence has returned.
Earlier this year, we led a major push to get legislation passed to formally categorize targeted attacks against police officers federal crimes with significant mandatory minimums.
Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) has introduced the Back the Blue Act. This legislation would classify attacks on police officers and firefighters as a federal crime and significantly increase the mandatory minimum penalties.
Any targeted attack on a law enforcement officer or firefighter would result in a mandatory minimum 10-year prison sentence for the attacker. If an officer death results, then the attacker would receive a mandatory minimum of 30-years in prison, with the possibility of receiving the death penalty kept on the table.
These men and women wake up every day and put their lives on the line to protect us. They are being deliberately targeted and ambushed around the country because their attackers believe they can get away with it.
It is time to prove them wrong!
The Back the Blue Act is as common sense as it gets. If someone specifically targets a law enforcement officer or firefighter, they deserve a punishment beyond what they would receive if they just attacked a citizen.
Right now, there is no additional Federal penalty for killing a police officer. That is ludicrous.
Take a long, hard look at the picture above. That is Detective Benjamin Marconi. He was the officer who was ambushed, shot, and killed in Texas. As of this morning, his killer is still at-large.
When the killer is ultimately caught, he will likely face Federal prosecution. Texas is working on legislation to make murdering a police officer a hate crime, but it doesn’t appear to be on the books yet.
Other states have implemented “Blue Lives Matter” laws to formally classify attacking a police officer as a hate crime. But right now, there is nothing on the Federal books.
Whereas Loretta Lynch has made excuses for the thugs who murder police officers, Donald Trump's pick for Attorney General, Senator Jeff Sessions, will be law enforcement’s champion. Police officers can’t wait until Jeff Sessions takes over as Attorney General.
Seriously, they can’t afford to wait any longer.
Right now, the Back the Blue Act has just 13 co-sponsors in the Senate and 12 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives. That is unacceptable!
