You’ve heard people say —” He’s a real man” or “He’s a man’s man”.
Well, what exactly do people mean when they are describing an ideal type man?
You’ve heard the usual adjectives—–
1. Strong
2. Unemotional
3. Independent
4. Competitive
5. Risk Taking
6. Unafraid
7. Tough
Sound like someone you know?
Unfortunately, this definition of a man was conceived thousands of years ago when men were the hunters and women were the gatherers in society.
But, and again——unfortunately, many boys are still taught to be this type of “Hunter Man”.
Because of this, as they grow up they are not taught and their fathers seldom model for them how to be ——–
1. Nurturing
2. Caring
3. A Listener
4. A Describer of Feelings
5. A Seeker of Help When Needed
In fact, it’s been said that modern men often are only allowed 3 emotions–
1. Anger
2. Humor
3. Sexual feelings
And so, many modern men who are still striving to be the “Marlboro Man”———engage in too many risky behaviors, cover up their feelings except when they are angry or turned on and do not get help when they need it. It is not surprising that men have a life expectancy about 7 years less than that of women.
In order to make sure that your relationship with a man will work for you it is important that you re-define your definition of what a “Real Man” is.
Meaning—- a man who can talk about his feelings, who can cry and who can seek out help when help is needed. A man who has enough of an emotional life that he does not have to act on every sexual impulse. A man who can feel proud of your accomplishments and beauty and feel admiration instead of only feeling anger when you attract attention. Along with honesty, dependability, independence and courage this is the modern definition of a “Real Man” that you should use when evaluating if you’re with one! It is a combination of all of these qualities that makes a “Man Strong Enough”.
Take a listen to Sheryl Crow singing the Real Man Anthem.
