(Before It's News)

India has found a way to monitor blackberry corporate emails without having Research in Motion (RIM) hand over the encrypted codes to the government, says a report. This ability to decrypt messages could help end the stand-off between the Canadian mobile maker and the Indian government.

Blackberry corporate emails are secure and cannot be accessed by a third party. It is this secrecy that makes the use of blackberry service desirable by corporates. However, in the 21st century terrorized world, the government believes that this secrecy could be used by terrorists to plot and plan attacks; hence, the demand to hand over the necessary encryption codes which would make accessing the emails possible.

However, RIM has maintained all along that they cannot hand over the codes because the system is so secure that they do not have access to the codes. Also, the company follows a global standard to meet data access requirements and does not make separate rules/deals for any individual country.

In the past, in a bid to reach a middle ground, the company did offer to supply ‘metadata’ – information about an email’s sender, recipient and the device from which it was sent, to the government. It said the authorities could use this to track down emails on companies’ servers. However, the government wasn’t too pleased with this offer as it categorically wants full access to corporate emails. Due to this break down in talks, Indian government even threatened to cut-off blackberry services in the country if the company did not comply.

However, the need to do the same does not arise now as the government may have finally found a way around the problem. R Chandrashekhar, the most senior civil servant in India’s telecommunication ministry, was quoted by Dow Jones Newswires as saying the government now believes it can monitor BlackBerry emails without decrypting messages. He gave no further details.

There are no comment available from the government on the report and RIM officials in India have declined to comment.
