(Before It's News)

Saavn, dubbed as the Spotify for Indian music, has gone one step further to get everyone with a mobile phone to stream the abundant music they have on the service. They have announced a J2ME mobile app which will work on Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and Motorola, basically feature phones which are Internet enabled. They already have a Chrome Web App, an iOS app and a Android app. So, they had the smartphone market covered. However, there are a good number of people in India who are using the mobile Internet with their feature phones and with a J2ME app which caters to OSs and platforms like Java, Symbian etc. it  makes a lot of sense. Indeed, this is probably the first ever comprehensive streaming app for the J2ME platform in India.

Vinodh Bhat, CEO and co-founder of Saavn spoke about their intention behind the development of this app.

“Although iOS and Android are the most innovative mobile platforms, they are only used by a fraction of the worldwide population. Today we are proud to bring our social music experience to feature phone users throughout India and around the world. Most mobile users in India and South Asia are just coming online for the first time – and we want to be their first and only music experience.”

I don’t have any J2ME phones lying around so I have not got a chance to get a look at it. Here are some screenshots that I have received.

Besides this, Saavn’s has included support for Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and Gujarati in its various apps. Bengali and Kannada are in the pipeline. This will help them gain more users in the Tier 2 and Tier 3 segments. Personally, I think making your service platform agnostic is the right way even though it might be somewhat of a challenge in terms of development and deployment. A streaming service will only benefit of there are maximum number of people using it. This also helps the service to monetize itself.

Have a Nokia? Check this app out and let us know how.
