Accountable care organizations (ACOs) are gaining increased popularity as a new healthcare payment and delivery model – one that is comprised of partnerships among groups of physicians, hospitals, payers, and other healthcare entities for the rendering of high-quality coordinated care to patients. ACOs are paid based on the population they serve rather than on a fee for service basis – with reimbursement adjustments based on performance.

On Sept. 20, the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (WPHIMSS) will host a gathering of healthcare professionals and expert panelists for a roundtable discussion on what is required for a successful ACO and the use of technology in its operations – which will ultimately provide high-quality and efficient delivery of healthcare to patients.

The event, which will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Monroeville, will feature an update on Pennsylvania’s health information technology initiatives from Robert Torres, the State Health Information Technology Coordinator of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and esteemed expert roundtable panelists that include:

  • Tom Johnson, MBA, CPA, Chief Information Officer, DuBois Regional Medical Center
  • Michael A. Cassidy, JD, CHC, shareholder and director of Tucker Arensberg, P.C. and Chair of the Health Law Practice Group
  • Dr. Robert Mirsky, Chief Medical Officer, HealthAmerica
  • Keith T. Kanel, MD, MHCM, FACP, Chief Medical Officer, Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative
  • Michael D. Parkinson, MD, MPH, FACPM, Senior Medical Director, Senior Medical Director of Health and Productivity, UPMC Health Plan and WorkPartners
