Nokia has been having a bad time since quite a while due to the rise of operating systems like Android and iOS. Their homegrown Symbian OS is almost dead except for a few feature phones. Their partnership with Windows Phone OS hasn’t exactly shaken things worldwide. However, now Nokia has shown that it is committed to rising in the mobile segment again by debuting two new high end phones, the Lumia 920 and the Lumia 820 at an event in New York City. That Nokia would announce these devices was no mystery as a couple of pics and specs had already leaked out a week before.
Lumia 920:
This is a phone which is powered by a 1.5 Ghz Snapdragon S4 processor and has a 4.5 inch 720p display. The battery has a 2000 mAH capacity and the camera is 8.7 MP Pureview sensor. Remember, Nokia launched a Pureview Symbian phone with 41 MP some time back! That felt like a big waste. The company seems to have learned from that and scaled the sensor down to practical areas. The phone’s camera has ‘floating lens’ stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics which offers an improved way for users to take pictures using the phone and minimising shaky photos. It also seems that the device can detect the intensity of light and change its brightness by itself. That’s neat! The design, however, is the same as that of previous Lumia phones.
Lumia 820:
This phone is slightly lesser than the 920 in terms of specs. It has a 4.3 inch screen with 1.4 dual-core S4 processor. It has 8GB of storage and a 5 megapixel camera. This one is not a Pureview one as seen in the 920. However, 820 has interchangeable covers which can different colors. This makes the phone much more desirable than the 920.
Windows Phone 8:
Both the phones that were announced come with the Windows Phone 8 mobile OS which now added several features like customisable Live Tiles, screenshot functionality, pinning stuff to home screen, IE10, photo viewing, pinch to zoom, Bing Integration, Camera FX filters and facial recognition app called Blink. The operating system has seen the addition of more colors for better customizability. The Windows Phone 8 OS also has a lot of shared code with Windows 8 for the desktop. This will bring about some consistency in the way stuff works on mobile and desktop, thus making usage comfortable.
Other Stuff:
Both the phones have a wireless charging functionality which is frankly a big plus when it comes to smartphones. Nokia has also got into a partnership with select places like Virgin Atlantic, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, who will be offering charging spots for these phones. The places are limited but if there is a good adoption, this can catch up. However, the wireless charging is an extra feature. The phones retain their traditional charging sockets.
Improvements have been made to the touch technology which can now recognize fingernails and gloved fingers. The phones are also NFC ready and this feature can be used to wirelessly stream music from compatible speaker docks.
My Thoughts:
Nokia is brilliant at their hardware and no one can deny that. I think these phones are the best in terms of the specs and features. Their choice of Windows Phone as their OS confused me when I heard it first. Their bet on a OS which had not even established itself in terms of features and apps. However, Microsoft has seemingly got its game together as is evidenced by their broad, ecosystem building strategy. Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 are good products but there is huge question mark whether these Microsoft systems will get enough traction worldwide. Microsoft always had a winner with the Windows Desktop even though it was annoying to many. It seems to have improved now and might yet change the games.
It is a very interesting time to be into mobile as so many new developments are happening. WebOS has recently been open sourced and Mozilla is going to launch its web based mobile OS soon. BB10 devices will be announced soon by the struggling RIM. Android is ramping up nicely with Jelly bean and the iPhone 5 will be released soon. Is there space for another player? Definitely, more the players, better is the innovation.
