Internet content movement assistance and optimization company Akamai Technologies has announced acquisition of cloud-based security solutions provider Prolexic. Akamai is expected to shell out US$ 370 million in an all–cash deal which is expected to be sealed in the first half of next year.
In an open declaration about the acquisition, Akamai chose to stress the criticality of online threats and data safety,
“Any company doing business on the Internet faces an evolving threat landscape of attacks aimed at disrupting operations, defacing the brand, or attempting to steal sensitive data and information. By joining forces with Prolexic, we intend to combine Akamai’s leading security and performance platform with Prolexic’s highly-regarded DDoS mitigation solutions for data center and enterprise applications protection. We believe that Prolexic’s solutions and team will help us achieve our goal of making the Internet fast, reliable, and secure.”
Akamai is essentially a company that offers digital networking and interface solutions to corporate clients. Hence it is absolutely critical for the company to ensure its data integrity and safety standards are as high as possible. Instead of procuring data safety solutions, it makes sense to outright procure a company that does it. With the acquisition of Prolexic, Akamai will be able to offer its clients with a wider range of security solutions to protect their IP Applications. Some of the notable mentions include email, file transfers and VPN.
Prolexic essentially safeguards data centers and enterprise IP applications against hacker attacks. With sophisticated firewalls and proactive virus detection algorithms, Prolexic is a reputed brand chosen by companies to specifically protect their data against theft or eavesdropping attempts. Prolexic will assure Akamai and its client’s data is protected across data centers from a very common form of attack known as: Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Attacks, wherein data streams are flooded with bogus packets that eventually cripple the system and clients are unable to access their own applications or virtual dashboards.
With Prolexic, Akamai has certainly enhanced its own standing within the increasingly competitive world of cloud storage and software as a service segment. Will other companies soon follow suite?
