Google has today announced that users will now be able to download their Gmail and Google Calendar data from Google Takeout. Google Takeout is a service which lets users download all their data from Google. This can be done for backing up your data or to transfer it to another service. Google Takeout has been available since more than a year and has been offering data download options for Google products like Youtube, Google Profile, Location history, Google Hangouts, Google Voice , Google Contacts, Orkut etc. However, options for Gmail and Google Calendar, arguably the most used of Google products were not available before this.
Once a user goes to Google Takeout, they are required to sign into their Google account and select the ‘Download your data’ option. All the services which are eligible for download are listed there. When I went there, I could not find an option to download Gmail data while Google Calendar was available. Google has said that the Gmail option is still rolling out to users globally and will be available to everyone before January of next year.
The Gmail and Google Calendar data can be downloaded in the MBox format, a UNIX format which stands for Mailbox and is compatible with many services.
This took a long time coming but is a very big improvement. Users should be able to control their data for convenience, privacy and other things. Locking it down is harmful to user’s privacy. Google has taken a good step with Google Takeout and we hope other online services follow suit too.
