Google is giving Nexus 5 owners an early Christmas present by rolling out 4.4.1 update. Soon after its launch the otherwise perfect device had complaints regarding its low camera quality. Hence, Google has improved image quality and overall speed on device. Furthermore, the update gives a boost to the time it takes to focus (especially in low light) and achieve white balance, as well as less shutter lag and the new ability to pinch-zoom the viewfinder in HDR+ mode.
“HDR+ lets you to take great shots in challenging environments, say where there’s a large contrast of bright and dark portions of the scene and also in low light situations. When you press the shutter button, instead of taking just one picture, we take a burst of shots in about 1/3 of a second, and apply computational photography to intelligently fuse images together”, Google announced in a company blog post.
Google’s Director of Engineering for Android David Burke told The Verge that before the update, the camera would create images focused on better quality over speed. Android 4.4.1 makes it so the camera fires frames at faster shutter speeds while not relying on optical image stabilization as it does now. After using the new software for a day, The Verge’s verdict is that images are much better and it has a gallery of before and after shots to show the difference. However, The Verge admits that there are still some very basic features missing, such as a single button or screen press for focusing and shooting.
We recently reported that Android KitKat 4.4 is present on 1.1% of active devices.
