In a bid to focus on ‘more relevant’ offerings, LinkedIn has pulled plug on Intro, a service that brings information about the LinkedIn users inside the default iOS Mail app. Launched in October last year, Intro was aimed to integrate LinkedIn contact details right into the iOS Mail app. However, it failed to strike a chord with users, due to its security concerns as LinkedIn was required to scan every email that came in a user’s inbox.
“While Intro is going away, we will continue to work on bringing the power of LinkedIn to wherever our members work,” said Deep Nishar, LinkedIn senior vice president of products and user experience, in a blog post. Intro supported Gmail, Google Apps, Yahoo Mail, AOL Mail, and iCloud. LinkedIn was working on an Android version of Intro, however the feature almost immediately garnered bad press for its questionable security methods.
The service will not be available for users after March 7, 2014 and will be shut off completely. Users of the service are required to disable Intro, or else their email accounts will not work normally after the shutdown date, added Nishar. In addition to Intro, LinkedIn is also taking down Slidecast, which enabled SlideShare members to upload presentations with audio. The function will shut down on April 30, leaving users more than two months to download their Slidecasts.
Finally, support for the LinkedIn iPad app on iOS versions older than 6.0 will also be eliminated as of Feb. 18, the company said. In related news, LinkedIn acquired job matching service Bright for $120 million last week.
