Do You Know a Child Being Sexually Abused?
Child sexual abuse often gets pushed under the rug. It results, however, in both short-term and long-term harm, including psychopathology later in life. The societal and human costs of child sexual abuse are high. Most male prisoners in the United States were sexually abused as children. Most parents do not know the importance of listening to their children and recognizing warning signs of child sexual abuse.
Despite the high costs of child sexual abuse, most people do not recognize the warning signs that a child is a victim of sexually abuse. Some people see the signs but do not connect them with sexual abuse. Some people even find some of these signs amusing without realizing the child is a victim of a hidden crime. Victims of this crime are destined for a life of suffering and possibly serious self-harm.
Very few children will admit being sexually abused. In most cases, their abuser threatened them to never tell a soul or something worse will happen to them. Many want to tell someone they trust, but nobody takes time to really listen to them.
Even worse, instead of being helped, many of thoee children are revictamized. They are punished at home and at school for exhibiting signs of being sexually abused.
Indicators and effects of child sexual abuse include:
Poor self-esteem
Dissociative disorders
Anxiety disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder
Children might exhibit regressive behaviors such as thumb sucking or bedwetting.
The strongest indicator: sexual acting out and inappropriate sexual knowledge and interest
Victims might withdraw from school and social activities and exhibit various learning and behavioral problems including:
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),
Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)
Teenage pregnancy and risky sexual behaviors might appear in adolescence.[
Child sexual abuse victims report almost four times as many incidences of self-inflicted harm.
