Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak was left dumbfounded at a contestant’s guesses on a program, which aired on Tuesday as part of “Veterans Week.” More surprising still, she ended up the winner.
Nura’s first unanticipated choice in the lightning round portion of the show was the letter “Z” for the the word pair that was ultimately revealed to be “Following Footprints.” This conversation followed:
Pat: “Say that again for me?”
Nura: “Z.”
Pat: “Did you say Z?”
Nura: “As in Zulu.”
Pat: “You did say Z! OK.”
She guessed one more letter during the round, “X.” Twice, when it came to her turn, she gave no answer at all.
When the lightning round ended, Sajak let the other two contestants, Steve and Troy, know their prize winnings for the day: $6,400 and $4,300 respectively. However Nura, who won no money in the round, took home $13,970 overall.
Social media was buzzing regarding the quizzical round. Some thought Nura was using good strategy:
The strategy Nura just used was not being selfless, it was sandbagging to protect her lead (smart), but it nearly backfired #WheelOfFortune

Or was perhaps intoxicated:
Z? Then no letter? Then Q? Is Nura drunk? #wheeloffortune — Mike H. (@hardware2k) November 11, 2015
Others thought it was simple generosity:
Way to go Nura! #wheeloffortune never saw someone throw a round so everyone could win some money. #share — Retro Rager (@retrorager) November 11, 2015
Just saw the classiest move on “Wheel of Fortune.” Nura threw the final puzzle to let a fellow military person win it. Much respect.

Sajak put the query to the contestant herself. “Now may I ask you a question?” “Sure,” Nura responded.
“You called some unusual letters in that round,” he said. Nura just shrugged replying, “That’s what I saw.”
The game show host laughed and said into the camera, “That’s not a satisfactory answer. She’s not under oath, so there’s nothing I can do.”
