During a recent rally in Illinois, the attitude displayed by one prominently placed audience member sparked more controversy than Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump’s brash rhetoric. The incident in question was captured and shared on Vine, where it has been viewed nearly 5 million times as of this writing.
As more details emerged about Johari Osayi Idusuyi, the 23-year-old woman reportedly seen in the video, many on the left declared her obstinacy heroic. Idusuyi spoke to Jezebel’s Kara Brown, who described the action in the clip as “the head flip heard ‘round the nation.”
In honor of her defiant act of literacy, Brown joined a chorus of supporters who designated Idusuyi a hero.
An American woman has become a hero for defiantly reading a book while attending a Trump rally. https://t.co/0I0NlkAxwX

Idusuyi explained that she attended the rally on a lark, noting that when she and her friends arrived, they were offered seats in the VIP section directly behind Trump’s podium. It was after she had heard a few minutes of the candidate’s speech that she said frustration with his behavior and rhetoric led her to read a book instead of pay attention to the message.
“Then I was like, I’m in the middle, I’m on camera,” she said, “so why not use the opportunity to promote a great book? I didn’t expect to get in an argument with the people behind me.”
A man tapped her on her shoulder, Idusuyi recalled, while a woman seated next to him displayed “disgust and anger” toward her.
The book she was reading, Citizen by Claudia Rankine, is described by IJReview’s Virginia Kruta as “an in-depth study of the pervasive nature of racism and micro aggressions in America today.”
As for whether Idusuyi would consider casting a ballot for Trump, she was adamant: “Definitely not.”
