Philadelphia’s mayor revealed something about the man who confessed to trying to kill a police officer that some are finding hard to believe.
“This is a criminal with a stolen gun who tried to kill one of our officers. It has nothing to do with being a Muslim or following the Islamic faith,” said Mayor Jim Kenney.
Kenney, who is in his first week as mayor, made the statement as he talked to reporters Friday even as officer Jessie Hartnett, 33, is recovering in the hospital from being shot three times in the left arm and sustaining “very serious injuries.”
The mayor believes something other than Islam is to blame for the incident. “There are just too many guns on the streets, and I think our national government needs to do something about that,” Kenney said.
What has some people puzzled is how the mayor’s statement differs from police accounts regarding the Jan. 7 incident. Suspect Edward Archer, 30, fired 13 shots at Hartnett while the officer was in his patrol car. Archer was dressed in Islamic clothes, a long white robe over dark pants, and told officers he initiated the execution-style shooting “in the name of Islam,” according to Police Commissioner Richard Ross, who also made statements to the press on Friday.
The weapon was a semi-automatic pistol police have determined was stolen.
Archer allegedly “confessed to committing this cowardly act in the name of Islam. He said he believes that the police defend laws that are contrary to the teaching of the Koran,” Ross said. The suspect also made statements during his interrogation indicating he pledged allegiance to ISIS and follows Allah. He also said his faith commanded him to shoot the officer.
Archer allegedly flagged down Hartnett’s patrol car on a city street. Video from a nearby surveillance camera shows the gunman rushing the police car, putting a gun directly into the driver-side window and firing.
“This is absolutely one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen,” Ross said. “This guy tried to execute the police officer. The police officer had no idea he was coming.”
