The Seat Next to Michelle Obama Will Be Left Empty at the State Of the Union – Here’s Why

The White House announced on Friday that while President Barack Obama delivers his last State of the Union Address next week, a seat next to Michelle Obama will be left empty.
Obama told 20,000 supporters on a conference call that the seat on Tuesday night during the address before Congress “will be left empty for the victims of gun violence who no longer have a voice.”
“They need the rest of us to speak for them. To tell their stories. To honor their memory,” the White House said in a written statement, according to USA Today. “To remind every single one of our representatives that it’s their responsibility to do something about this.”

The move by the White House comes on top of Obama’s executive actions announced on Monday to address gun violence, as well as his participation in CNN’s Guns in America town hall Thursday night.
As reported by Western Journalism, Taya Kyle, whose husband, Chris, was the subject of the movie American Sniper and a victim of gun violence, challenged President Obama at the town hall on the effectiveness of more gun control legislation. She pointed out that gun violence has dropped to records lows over the last several years, while gun ownership has reached record highs.
House Speaker Paul Ryan announced earlier this week that South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will give the Republican response to Obama’s State of the Union Address. The governor received high praise for her leadership following last June’s Charleston shooting.
