As the year 2011 rolled in, I celebrated by playing some Modern Warfare 2 on the PS3. On January 1st I logged into a Team Deathmatch room to find some players were completely invincible. Since that’s no fun, I immediately signed out. I tried again a couple of days later thinking surely Activision had booted the hackers and released some kind of patch. Instead I found more invincible players and the room was modified where it was possible to run at 100mph.

Today I logged on and the problem is worse. It’s now impossible to get a Team Deathmatch game that isn’t hacked. Not only that, but if you end up in one of these rooms, they have locked your controls where it’s impossible to get out. Pressing Start does nothing and you’ll have to restart the entire game if you still want to try to play. According to Just Push Start, players are experiencing tons of other issues as well.

In the Spectator mode, you can see the offending players opening up “V.I.P.” menus that give them access to options such as wall hacks (the ability to shoot through walls), God Mode, some type of aimbot that marks targets with red boxes that become bullet magnets, and even a mode titled “drug mode” has been spotted which puts a purple and grey filter on the game and negates damage to the player.

It doesn’t get any better post-game. Hackers will alter your clan tag and emblem, re-lock everything you have earned, and even display “YOU GOT F****** OWNED” on Infinity Wards feed line. They even have the option to freeze you up or derank you. Did you work hard for your prestige? They don’t care.

Where is Activision in all this? Do they not care to provide a patch for a game that is over 2 years old? If so, it raises questions on whether one can rely on gaming companies to continue to support their products once they’ve made all the money they can from them.
