For women still unsure about the practicalities of meeting men on dating sites, I often recommend the benefits of having a wingwoman present – a friend who can help make the situation more relaxed and safe. In fact, for many women, having a non-committal first date at a pub, attended by a friend is the perfect way to weed out unsuitable guys without feeling pressured or at risk. As women gradually become more confident about online dating, this method may not be quite as popular as it once was, but it’s still a perfectly valid tactic.
Now a survey’s come out where women have confessed to choosing “ugly” friends as their wingwomen, to make themselves look better in comparison and to avoid situations where the man finds the wingwoman more attractive. This is hardly surprising, I must say. I personally know of at least one case where a woman brought a friend on a date and her friend ended up hitting it off with the guy and walking off with a husband. It really does happen. And while I personally believe that everything that happens happens for a reason, you don’t really want to be on the receiving end of that sort of situation. It helps to play it safe. Of course, girls, if you’re going to divulge information like that and tell the world you want your “ugly” friend by your side at a date, none of your friends are going to want to help you out. Imagine being asked to play wingwoman to a friend after reading a survey like that! Of course, you can sidestep the whole situation by picking a blatantly unavailable friend for the job. A happily married friend, a gay friend, even a gay male friend. Either that, or just make sure none of your friends ever see the results of this survey.
